Dr. Verkeen Gorguy

M.B F.R.C.P.C - CONSULTANT PSYCHIATRIST

Dr. Verkeen Gorguy is an experienced psychiatrist with a career spanning over three decades in patient care, specializing in adult psychiatry with a focus on women’s and maternal mental health. Before her tenure in psychiatry, Dr. Gorguy practiced as an OB/GYN physician, earning her certification and master’s degree from Ain Shams University in 1987. Her journey led her to complete a psychiatric residency at the State University of New York, Stony Brook campus in 1997, followed by a fellowship in ECT and consultation liaison.

During her practice as a psychiatrist over decades for inpatient and outpatient Staff in hospitals, Dr. Gorguy recognized the crucial need for a more comprehensive approach to mental health care. Recognizing that her patients required more time and support from Psychotherapy and social workers, she took proactive steps. Upon establishing her practice, she partnered with psychotherapists and social workers to create a holistic treatment environment. This collaborative effort aimed to provide patients with immediate access to therapy sessions, ensuring more effective and personalized care. The impact of this integrated approach was profound, significantly improving patient outcomes.

Throughout her career, Dr. Gorguy has made significant contributions to the field, including roles as a staff psychiatrist at the Nova Scotia Hospital and later at Rouge Valley Health System in Toronto, now Scarborough Health Network. She has been actively involved in medical education, mentoring medical students and psychiatry residents. Although officially retiring from hospital practice in 2020, Dr. Gorguy resumed her professional commitments amidst the COVID-19 pandemic, serving as the medical director of Emerald Park Medical. In this capacity, she supports community family doctors in managing the increased mental health demands resulting from the pandemic.

Currently, Dr. Gorguy provides psychiatric consultation services and facilitates for family physicians. Her dedication to patient care and ongoing commitment to mental health advocacy underscore her esteemed reputation in the field.
